Chapter 16
#16: He’s Just a Patient…Right?
“SAKURA!” Tsunade roared as her apprentice waltzed into the hospital room. “I need you to heal this young boy. It seems he had an injury at the Academy.” With that, she left, and Sakura sighed. She’d been on her way to Naruto’s house to help him clean up his apartment today. Since he’d been sick, the place was a trash-heap, and she’d volunteered to help him. While it still puzzled her about his whisker markings being more Kyuubi-like, she tossed the thought aside and concentrated on getting her priorities straight. Sadly, being a ninja always came first before anything, and it really was starting to piss her off.
“Excuse me…” her patient muttered in a high voice. When Sakura looked at him, she noticed he had a distinct appearance that reminded her of Sasuke, and even his hair rivaled the chicken-ass on top of the Uchiha’s head. “Can you heal me now miss? My arm hurts really bad…”
Even though inside, it pained her to look at the child, she managed to at least look him in the eye, because they were the only thing that set him apart from Sasuke. His grey eyes had a softer glint to them, childish if you will…much like Naruto’s shimmering gaze. No, not on the job Sakura! She told herself, and smiled brightly at the child. “What’s your name?” she asked him, and looked at him with sudden interest.
The boy scratched his head a little. “My name is Naki Hanji.” He answered in his childish tone. “Now can you heal me? I want to get back to class.”
Thank the heavens. He’s not an Uchiha… Sakura prayed in her head, and shook her head. “Okay. Now sit still. This might sting just a little.” She cooed softly, and formed her hand signs that began the medical jutsu. “What’d you do to it anyways?”
Hanji blinked. “I was just practicing some shuriken target practice, but I think I tore an arm muscle or something…I did throw one too hard…” he answered, and flinched a little.
“That happens sometimes.” Sakura stated, recalling an incident with Kiba when he’d first began the Ninja Academy. “Everyone screws up. It’s just a way of life for us.”
“Even so, it bugs the hell out of me.”
Sakura chuckled. “There, you’re all good. Now I’ll take you back to the Academy.”
Hanji laughed playfully, and jumped off of the counter. “Excuse me, what’s your name?” he said, pulling on the ends of her skirt. “I must know!”
A little puzzled at the question, Sakura bent down to see him eye-to-eye, and smiled brightly. “Haruno Sakura.” She replied in a friendly voice.
Her eyes went wide as Hanji kissed her cheek. Brave little fella for being so young… her inner-self sing-songed, and Sakura stared at the boy. “That’s a sweet name! I like it, Sakura-chan.”
Sakura’s breath hitched in her throat, recalling the suffix that Naruto always used for her. He was the only one who used it, and it bothered her a little that this little kid was now using it, and more of the fact that he looked so much like Sasuke. “Please, just call me either Sakura-san or Haruno-san?” she asked, and tried to hide the fact she was wiping her eyes at the tears that threatened to begin to crawl down her face.
Hanji looked a little disappointed, but then smiled. “I’ll just call you Sakura.” He said, and grabbed her hand, dragging her out of the office. “Now, I need to get back to the Academy.”
Something about this child gave Sakura the creeps, especially how it looked as if he had known her all his life. He’s just a kid, so relax…he doesn’t know better. She pleaded in her head, silently hoping that she was correct. Sakura let her mind drift to other subjects. Maybe, she’d be able to see Iruka for a little. Drop by for a visit, help him teach a little, ask for some help on Naruto, and then head out to find said ninja. Yes…that’d be nice.
“Sakura-chan?”
Sakura froze, making Hanji fall on his face. Talk about speaking of the devil. “Naruto? Is that you?” she laughed nervously, and turned to face the blonde ninja behind her. “What are you doing here?”
Naruto blinked his eyes, looking at Hanji on the ground, and then back to Sakura. “…You told me to meet you at the hospital earlier. I went there and they said you went out with some kid...” he said, and looked at the Academy student on the ground. “I’m supposing this is him?”
Right on cue, Hanji popped up, jumped in front of Sakura, and glared at Naruto. “Yes, that would be me. And if you can’t see, Sakura is with me, so back off pal!” he exclaimed, and smiled at Sakura before going back to glare at the blonde in front of them.
Naruto raised an eyebrow. “And your point is?” he asked.
“The point is, is that you need to buzz off because Sakura doesn’t have any time for you right now!” the Sasuke-look-alike yelled, and started to turn around with Sakura. “Go away!”
Sakura’s eyes widened considerably, and stared at Naruto. “Naruto, I-”
“No, Sakura-chan. You’re busy; I can see…I’ll see you later.” Naruto interrupted, slight bitterness in his tone, and turned around before flying off through the city.
Sakura watched sadly as he left her standing there, and Hanji looked at her. When she turned around, he saw the tears in her eyes. “Sakura…” Hanji began, shuffling his feet. “I’m sorry…you go after him…I didn’t know he meant so much to you…”
“It’s…okay…” Sakura choked, and wiped her eyes. “You sure I can go?”
Hanji smiled. “Yeah. It’s okay.”
Sakura gave the little boy a quick hug, and jumped off after Naruto. I guess he is a little like Sasuke-kun…but he’s totally different in personality… A smile found its way across her face. Hanji is a nice kid...I’ll probably run into him more often now.
When her thoughts receded into the farthest corners of her head, she arrived in front of Naruto’s apartment. “Here we go…” she sighed to herself, and knocked on the door.
The door opened, and Naruto stepped out. “Yes?” he said, leaning on the door frame, crossing his arms.
Sakura blushed at how he carefree he looked. “I’m sorry for earlier…Hanji was just a little boy…he didn’t know he did something wrong.”
“That should go without saying, now shouldn’t it?” Naruto said, and kicked himself off of the door frame. “Now, what did you want me for earlier?”
Sakura shuffled her feet. “I…” Without any warning, she latched onto Naruto, nearly crushing him in her embrace. “I’m sorry about Kakashi-sensei yesterday! I didn’t mean for him to hurt you! I just needed to tell you something, but he found out instead!” she cried, letting it all come out before she stopped herself. “I just wanted to say I loved you!”
A small smile crept on her face. She’d done it, without any interruptions. YES! She cheered, and looked up at Naruto. Naruto looked at her with a confused expression. “What did you say? I didn’t understand a word of that.” He said.
Sakura stared at him. “You didn’t hear me?” she said, anger rising. “YOU IDIOTIC DEAF BASTARD!” With that, she hit him off of the apartment building, sending him crashing down almost right on Hanji down below.
Hanji looked down at Naruto on the ground. “…You’re such a dunce.” He said, shaking his head, and continued into the Academy. “Poor guy’s gonna get himself killed.”
